Giants agree to trade for J.J. McCarthy after Dart injury

The New York Giants have agreed to acquire quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick, CBS Sports reported. The supplied material does not include confirmation from either team.
The move follows Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury, which left Jameis Winston and practice-squad call-up Jake Haener as the Giants’ available options. Winston started against Tennessee in Week 3. Whether McCarthy will start or provide depth remains unclear.
Minnesota selected McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 draft. A knee injury sidelined him for his rookie season, and he made 10 career starts for the Vikings. CBS Sports reports he threw 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season.
The Vikings had placed McCarthy behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz on the depth chart. CBS Sports says the trade also clears about US$4.6 million in cash and cap space for Minnesota.
