Gerrard warns Liverpool against selling Jones as local talent crisis looms
Steven Gerrard tells BFM Radio he “wouldn’t allow” Curtis Jones to leave, citing the midfielder’s unique understanding of Anfield’s demands and his status as the squad’s only senior Merseyside native.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has issued a stark warning to the club’s hierarchy, urging them to retain midfielder Curtis Jones during the upcoming summer transfer window. Speaking to BFM Radio, Gerrard described the 25-year-old as “crucial and vital,” emphasising that the club must prioritise keeping local talent within its first-team squad.
Jones currently stands as the only senior player in the Liverpool squad hailing from Merseyside. With academy graduates Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni having reached the first team but lacking local roots, Gerrard warned that it is becoming increasingly plausible that the senior squad could face a season without a single player from the city. He argued that growing up in Merseyside provides an innate understanding of the club’s demands, style, and fan expectations that is difficult to replicate.
“I wouldn’t allow Curtis Jones to leave,” Gerrard stated, drawing parallels to the club’s historical tradition of homegrown leadership. He cited legends such as Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, and Steve McManaman as examples of players who deeply understand the values and principles of the institution. Gerrard also expressed regret over the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, noting that while players must make their own career decisions, the loss of local identity is significant.
The intervention comes amidst growing speculation regarding Jones’ future. Recent reports have linked the midfielder with a move to Inter Milan, while journalist David Lynch claimed that talks regarding a new contract have “effectively ceased.” However, no official confirmation has been provided by Liverpool or the player’s representatives, leaving the status of his tenure at Anfield uncertain.
Jones has earned his place in the squad through merit, making 226 senior appearances for the club. His commitment to the team was recently highlighted when he was deployed at right-back in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, a position outside his natural preference. As Liverpool prepares to lose several long-serving players this summer, Gerrard believes Jones is well-positioned to emerge as a new leader within the dressing room, provided the club’s owners, FSG, do not cash in on him.
