German Chancellor Merz warns US of strategic failure in Iran conflict

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has publicly stated that the United States is being humiliated in its ongoing conflict with Iran, asserting that Tehran appears clearly stronger than previously anticipated. Speaking in Marsberg, Merz warned that Washington lacks a clear exit strategy from the engagement, drawing direct parallels to the prolonged quagmires experienced in Iraq and Afghanistan. He specifically criticised the negotiating tactics of Iranian officials and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, describing the situation as a strategic failure for the US.

The comments come amidst growing European concerns regarding energy disruptions and economic instability caused by the wider Middle East conflict. Merz highlighted the immediate economic repercussions for Germany, stating the war is costing the nation a great deal of money and negatively impacting national economic output. He described the current situation as a tangled web where the fallout is already hitting domestic stability.

Berlin has indicated readiness to deploy minesweepers to secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, though this support is strictly conditional on a cessation of hostilities. Merz urged a rapid end to the war, noting that the conflict has a direct impact on Germany's economic output and that the difficulty in exiting such conflicts is a lesson learned painfully from past military engagements.

Concurrently, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reinforced the need for a credible nuclear deterrent due to ongoing nuclear threats against Europe. He noted that France and Germany are deepening cooperation in this area amidst rising anxiety over regional instability. As long as nuclear threats against them and their partners continue, Berlin maintains that a credible deterrent is necessary.

Diplomatic efforts have stalled, with a planned US mission to Islamabad by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner cancelled by President Donald Trump following failed talks in mid-April. This cancellation follows a first round of discussions that failed to yield a deal, leaving both sides entrenched in their respective positions regarding the widening conflict.

The remarks are set against a backdrop of broader security challenges, including a collapse in the Sahel region where armed groups have attacked military positions in Mali. Additionally, security scrutiny has increased following an assassination attempt on US President Trump at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, further complicating the international security environment.
