US–Germany relations

A presidential message marking German American Day on 6 October recognised German Americans’ contributions to US agriculture, industry, military service and civic life. It also used the occasion to frame the US–Germany relationship around mutual respect and a shared desire for peace and prosperity.

The White House message dates the arrival of 13 families from Krefeld and the founding of Germantown, Pennsylvania, to 6 October 1683. It presents their story as the beginning of German settlement in America.

The message says Germany has taken steps towards a stronger, more balanced NATO since the summit in The Hague “last year”. It places those steps within a broader allied commitment to increase investment in common defence.

It also links allied defence investment to expected growth in the transatlantic defence industrial base and thousands of jobs for American workers. The message provides no figures or supporting detail for those forecasts.
