Gavi calls for restraint as FIFA investigates World Cup final brawl
Spanish star urges global football governing body to avoid post-match suspension following melee at MetLife Stadium
Spain midfielder Gavi has publicly urged FIFA not to impose a suspension on Argentina’s Leandro Paredes following the altercation that erupted at the conclusion of the World Cup final. The incident occurred seconds after the final whistle of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium, involving Paredes, teammate Nahuel Molina, and coach Roberto Ayala.
FIFA has confirmed that no red card was issued to Paredes during the match. However, the governing body announced on Monday evening that its disciplinary committee had appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code arising from the post-match melee.
Speaking to Spanish radio station El Partidazo de COPE, Gavi argued that while the incident presented a poor image for young fans, the physical and aggressive elements inherent to football must be accepted. He suggested that the most logical outcome would have been for Paredes to be sent off during the match, implying that further post-match punishment is unnecessary.
The altercation involved specific violent actions, including Paredes grabbing Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground. Argentina’s Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Spain captain Rodri, while coach Roberto Ayala appeared to punch Dani Olmo in the face.
Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was already sent off in second-half injury time for a wild challenge on Pau Cubarsi. The outcome of the current FIFA investigation into the remaining participants remains unknown, with specific charges or sanctions yet to be determined.
