Gauff claims second Cincinnati Open title in all-American final

Coco Gauff has secured her second Cincinnati Open women's singles title, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 in a final that marked a significant milestone for the tournament. The victory, reported by Sky Sports, saw the world No 4 become the third player in the Open Era to win multiple titles in Cincinnati, joining the ranks of Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.

The match represented the first all-American women's final in Cincinnati in 56 years. Gauff reached the decider by defeating unseeded Sara Bejlek, who had previously eliminated world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Pegula, meanwhile, advanced by beating defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals.

Gauff established control early in the contest, storming out to a 5-0 lead in the first set before taking it 6-2. Although Pegula fought back to lead 5-4 in the second set, Gauff converted five of her six break points to close out the match. The victory was Gauff's fifth straight-set win of the tournament.

In her post-match comments, Gauff reflected on her development, stating, "I think it's night and day, the player I was last year to now." She cautioned against reading too much into the result for the upcoming major, noting, "I don't think that this is an indicator that I'm going to do well in New York [at the US Open]. Just knowing the quality wins that I had this week, hopefully I can use that experience."

Pegula acknowledged the difficulty of facing Gauff at her current level, describing her as "dangerous" and "confident" heading into New York. The head-to-head record between the two players is now tied at five wins apiece, following Gauff's victory in the Wuhan final last year.

With the US Open scheduled to begin on 30 August, the Cincinnati result provides a significant confidence boost for Gauff as she prepares for the next major championship.
