Garcia challenges featherweight hierarchy ahead of White House bout
Steve Garcia argues his performance against Diego Lopes at UFC Freedom 250 will determine the next contender, bypassing current default challenger Movsar Evloev.

Steve Garcia has publicly rejected the notion that Movsar Evloev is the automatic next challenger for the UFC featherweight title, asserting that his own performance in the upcoming bout against Diego Lopes will dictate the division’s hierarchy. Speaking to MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference, Garcia indicated he does not accept the current standing of Evloev as set-in-stone, arguing that a decisive victory on Sunday could secure him a title shot.
The contest is scheduled for UFC Freedom 250, which will take place at the White House in Washington on Sunday. Garcia, who holds a 19-5 MMA record with an 8-3 mark in the UFC, stated that the manner in which he defeats Lopes will be the "big deciding factor" for his standing in the division. He suggested that the organisation’s tendency to hand the next opportunity to Evloev could be overridden if Garcia makes a significant impression against his opponent.
Lopes presents a formidable challenge, holding a 27-9 MMA record and a 6-3 record within the UFC. According to available records, only champion Alexander Volkanovski and Evloev have faced Lopes in the UFC, with neither fighter able to secure a finish against him. Garcia acknowledged the difficulty of the task, noting that Lopes has extensive fight tape and specific tendencies that require careful analysis.
"I think at this level, a lot of us do [break down opponents]," Garcia said, referring to the study of triggers and mindsets. He expressed confidence that he and Lopes would "set the tone and get it off right," implying a high-intensity start that could differentiate his performance from previous encounters. Garcia’s comments suggest a strategic approach aimed at exploiting weaknesses that have previously stymied top contenders.
The outcome of the bout remains unknown, and the UFC has not yet announced an official decision regarding the next title challenger. Garcia’s assertion that he can leapfrog Evloev is his personal opinion and does not reflect an organisational mandate. The final determination of the title picture will depend on the result of the fight and subsequent decisions by the promotion, leaving the current hierarchy in a state of uncertainty ahead of Sunday’s event.
