GameStop earnings lift driven by eBay stake rather than retail sales
The gaming retailer’s net income surged 72 per cent on unrealised investment gains, even as core revenue is expected to decline and cash reserves fall sharply.

GameStop shares rose on Monday following the release of better-than-expected preliminary results for its fiscal second quarter. The gaming merchandise retailer reported a 72 per cent year-on-year increase in net income to $310 million, a figure driven primarily by unrealised gains on a significant equity position.
During the quarter, GameStop converted derivative positions into a direct investment of 43.4 million eBay shares. By early August, the fair value of this holding had reached approximately $4.95 billion. This non-operational windfall was substantial enough to offset a $75 million loss recorded on digital assets and related receivables.
Despite the share price rally, the underlying performance of the core retail business remains under pressure. Management confirmed in the preliminary release that revenue is expected to decline year-on-year to between $780 million and $800 million for the second quarter. This suggests that the reported profit growth is attributable to investment gains rather than an expansion in sales.
The acquisition of the eBay stake has also had a noticeable impact on the company’s liquidity. Cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities have decreased to approximately $5.06 billion, down from $8.69 billion a year earlier. This reduction in cash reserves may dampen the stock’s near-term appeal for investors focused on balance sheet strength.
Technical indicators show that GameStop shares broke above their 20-day moving average on 31 August, suggesting potential short-term bullish momentum. However, the stock remains down nearly 9 per cent compared with its level at the start of the year.
A further complication for investors is the current absence of Wall Street analyst coverage for GameStop. Without standard estimates or target valuations from analysts, market participants are left without independent verification of the company’s forward guidance and prospects.
