IND vs AFG: Gautam Gambhir backs ICC’s pink-ball initiative
India head coach argues initiative reduces weather-related truncations in high-stakes fixtures

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has publicly endorsed the International Cricket Council’s recent approval of a trial involving pink balls in day-night Test matches. The initiative aims to mitigate the frequency of truncated games caused by adverse weather or poor visibility, thereby increasing the likelihood of a conclusive result in critical encounters.

Gambhir, speaking from New Chandigarh on Friday, emphasised the strategic importance of securing a definitive outcome in high-pressure situations. He noted that the availability of pink balls offers a mechanism to continue play when natural light fades, a factor that has historically disrupted the final stages of crucial series.

The coach highlighted the potential implications for the World Test Championship (WTC) qualification process. He illustrated a scenario where a team, playing the final Test before the WTC final, could be denied a victory and subsequent qualification solely due to bad light. Under the new trial, such interruptions can be managed if both participating teams agree to the conditions.

“I love that (pink-ball idea). I always believe that if there’s an opportunity to get a result, you should have that opportunity,” Gambhir stated. He acknowledged that while the protocol benefits the integrity of the result, it may introduce variables that are “uncertain or difficult for the players playing in that Test.”

The ICC’s trial requires prior mutual agreement from both teams to utilise pink balls specifically during bad light situations in regular Tests. This framework allows for flexibility while maintaining the traditional structure of the game, addressing concerns about fairness and player safety.

India is currently preparing for upcoming Test assignments in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Both regions are known for frequent weather disruptions, making the potential application of this trial particularly relevant for the Indian squad’s future fixtures.

The endorsement from Gambhir aligns with broader efforts by cricket administrators to enhance the spectator experience and ensure that Test matches deliver meaningful conclusions. The trial represents a pragmatic approach to balancing tradition with the practical demands of modern scheduling and climate variability.
