Best banks in Texas for 2026
Regional lender secures 16th consecutive year of leadership in customer satisfaction study

Bankrate has released its 2026 rankings for the best banks and credit unions in Texas, identifying Frost Bank as the state’s leading financial institution. The selection process evaluated institutions based on product offerings, fee structures, yields, minimum deposit requirements, digital capabilities, and customer satisfaction data sourced from J.D. Power, the FDIC, and the NCUA.

Frost Bank secured the top position for the 16th consecutive year, a result driven by its performance in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction study. The survey assessed factors including complaint resolution, account options, digital access, and consumer trust. Headquartered in San Antonio, the bank operates more than 200 branches and 1,700 ATMs exclusively within Texas, offering 24/7 customer service via phone, live chat, and in-person visits.

Despite its service excellence, Frost Bank’s account yields are less competitive compared to online alternatives. The institution requires substantial deposits to access its highest rates, mandating $20 million for top money market yields and $15,000 for peak savings rates. Additionally, Frost Personal Account holders incur a $2 out-of-network ATM fee, a detail that may deter frequent travellers outside the state.

Texas Capital Bank was highlighted as a strong regional alternative, earning a 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bankrate’s scoring system. The bank offers the Star High-Yield Savings Account, available exclusively to Texans, which carries no service fees or minimum deposit requirements. Its Star Plus Checking account provides up to $20 per month in out-of-network ATM fee rebates and earns interest. The bank’s online-only division, Bask Bank, also offers competitive yields across all account types.

Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union emerged as the highest-scoring credit union in the state, serving over one million members across 65 branches. Its Really Free Checking account requires no monthly fee or minimum balance and earns interest on any balance. Members also access more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide. For those prioritising physical presence, Chase Bank was noted for its extensive footprint of approximately 480 locations in Texas, alongside a highly rated mobile app, though its accounts generally carry monthly fees and below-average yields.
