French prosecutors seek pre-trial detention for pop star Patrick Bruel over sexual abuse allegations
The request follows nine allegations of rape and sexual assault spanning 2010 to 2019, with additional complaints from the 1990s and 2000s added to the file despite potential statute of limitations issues.

French prosecutors in Nanterre have formally requested that pop star Patrick Bruel be charged and placed in pre-trial detention following nine allegations of sexual abuse. The charges include rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, with the alleged offences occurring between 2010 and 2019. The prosecutor’s office stated that the request was made to the investigating magistrates on Wednesday, who are now scheduled to decide whether to open a judicial investigation and formally indict the 67-year-old singer and actor.
The legal file has expanded beyond the initial nine complaints. Prosecutors confirmed that allegations from 13 additional individuals, accusing Bruel of similar offences between 1992 and 2008, have been added to the dossier. However, the prosecutor’s office noted that these earlier complaints appear to be beyond the statute of limitations at this stage. The core investigation focuses on the more recent period, involving nine identified victims.
Bruel, a major figure in French pop culture known for his music career and film appearances, has consistently denied the allegations. In a statement released last month, he protested his innocence on social media, asserting that he had never forced a woman. Following his detention on Monday, his legal team indicated he would cooperate fully with investigators to demonstrate his innocence. Bruel has also cancelled all scheduled concerts until September.
The case has drawn attention from several high-profile accusers. Daniela Elstner, the director of Unifrance, formally accused Bruel of attempted rape in 1997 when she was a 26-year-old intern at the organisation during a film festival in Mexico. Her lawyer, Jade Dousselin, described the prosecutor’s decision to seek charges as a significant legal victory for victims. Other accusers include television presenter Flavie Flament, who alleges she was raped in 1991 when she was a minor, and a former beauty queen and a physiotherapist, who filed complaints in late May and early June regarding incidents in 2008 and 2000 respectively.
This development marks the latest chapter in the scrutiny of French celebrities following the #MeToo movement, coming after film legend Gérard Depardieu received a suspended prison sentence last year for sexual assault. As the judicial process moves forward, the investigating magistrates’ decision on Wednesday will determine the formal status of the charges against one of France’s most recognisable cultural figures.
