French authorities arrest Tunisian suspect in plot targeting Paris museum and Jewish community
A 27-year-old national of Tunisia was taken into custody on 7 May following a probe into suspected terrorist conspiracy, with sources indicating plans to strike cultural and religious sites in the capital.
French authorities have detained a 27-year-old Tunisian man suspected of plotting a violent attack inspired by jihadism. The arrest, confirmed by the anti-terror prosecutor's office on 11 May, follows a preliminary investigation launched on 6 May into a suspected terrorist criminal conspiracy. The suspect is currently held in pre-trial detention pending further judicial proceedings.
According to sources familiar with the case, the suspect was allegedly targeting a Paris museum and members of the Jewish community, though no specific objective has been officially confirmed. Reports from Le Monde and Le Parisien suggest the Louvre museum and the Jewish community in the 16th arrondissement were under consideration. The suspect was also reportedly contemplating joining the ranks of the Islamic State terrorist organisation in Syria or Mozambique.
The probe is being conducted by the internal DGSI security services alongside the counter-terrorism unit of the SAT-BC criminal investigation division. Digital analysis of the suspect's cellphone revealed numerous jihadist propaganda videos, hundreds of photographs depicting firearms and knives, and search queries on ChatGPT regarding bomb-making techniques. Additionally, the individual had utilised an image of an IS fighter executing prisoners as a social media profile picture.
Biographical details indicate the suspect was born in Djerba in 1999 and arrived in France in 2022 after reaching Europe via the Italian island of Lampedusa. His legal representative, Reda Ghilaci, declined to comment immediately upon contact by the AFP news agency. This case emerges against a backdrop of heightened alertness for radical Islamist ideology, occurring amidst the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran and Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
France has recently experienced an increase in jihadist violence following a period of relative calm between 2021 and 2023. In 2025 alone, three attacks resulted in two deaths, while internal security services successfully thwarted seven other plots. This arrest follows a similar incident in March involving two brothers of Italian-Moroccan nationality arrested in northern France over a deadly and antisemitic plot.
