The victory, achieved at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, saw the defending champions accumulate six points from two games, ensuring progression to the knockout rounds regardless of the outcome of their final fixture against Norway.
The match was suspended for more than two hours after lightning was detected within eight miles of the stadium, triggering strict FIFA safety protocols that mandate a 30-minute pause and evacuation of seating areas for each strike. This marked the first weather-related delay of the tournament, contrasting with other fixtures such as the Norway versus Senegal game in New Jersey, which proceeded on time despite heavy rain.
Kylian Mbappé was instrumental in the result, scoring twice to bring his tournament tally to four goals. His second strike, capitalising on a defensive error by Iraq, moved his career World Cup total to 16, equalling the long-standing record held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
