France secure World Cup progression after weather-delayed victory over Iraq
The two-time champions move within one result of the Round of 16, while Iraq’s knockout hopes hang on other Group I outcomes.

France have mathematically secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 following a 3-0 victory over Iraq at Philadelphia Stadium. The result, achieved despite a significant two-hour disruption caused by severe thunderstorms, ensures the reigning Ballon d’Or champions advance to the knockout stages, contingent only on Norway winning or drawing against Senegal in the concurrent Group I fixture.
The match was marked by extensive weather delays, with the second-half kickoff postponed by 1 hour and 40 minutes after heavy rain and lightning forced spectators into the stadium concourses. Further delays occurred as stadium staff used squeegees to remove standing water from the pitch before play could resume.
Kylian Mbappé scored two goals for France, capitalising on early dominance and a defensive error from Iraq. His first strike came in the 14th minute, a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area, while his second followed a pass from Ousmane Dembele. Dembele added a third goal 12 minutes after the restart, securing the win for France, who now sit on six points from two games.
The victory places Mbappé level with Miroslav Klose on 16 career World Cup goals. His four goals in the current tournament place him one behind Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race, after the Argentine captain scored a brace against Austria earlier on Monday to reach 18 career World Cup goals.
Iraq, who have lost both of their opening matches, remain in contention for a knockout spot as a third-placed team but likely require a win against Senegal in their final group match. The side was further hampered by the early exit of Aymen Hussein, who scored their only goal in the tournament opener, after he left the pitch in the 26th minute with an apparent injury.
