France have mathematically secured their passage to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Iraq 3-0 on Monday. The result ensures the defending champions advance to the knockout stages with a game to spare, maintaining their position as serious contenders for the title.
The fixture, which got underway in Arlington before moving to Philadelphia, was halted after 45 minutes with France leading 1-0. Kylian Mbappé had opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the 38th minute, but the momentum was abruptly interrupted by severe weather conditions.
Spectacular thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and lightning strikes forced stadium officials to activate safety protocols at the roofless Lincoln Financial Field. The suspension lasted for two hours and 12 minutes, during which spectators were evacuated and the pitch was reported to be completely washed out.
Play resumed in Arlington, where France immediately reasserted their dominance. Mbappé doubled his tally with a close-range finish set up by Ousmane Dembélé. Dembélé then added a third goal, capitalising on a pass from Olise, to complete the scoring.
Iraq, visibly affected by the extended delay and France’s relentless attacking play, were unable to create meaningful opportunities in the second half.
