France places nation on high alert following first hantavirus detection on cruise ship
Officials warn the full extent of transmission remains unknown until May 19 due to the virus's long incubation period
The French government has placed the country on high alert after the detection of the first hantavirus case in France. Health authorities have confirmed that they are adhering strictly to World Health Organization guidelines in response to the outbreak. The focus of the containment strategy is the HV Hondius cruise ship, which has been identified as the source of the infection.
In accordance with these strict measures, five passengers from the vessel have been isolated at Paris's Bichat hospital.
