France imposes travel ban on Israeli Security Minister Ben-Gvir over flotilla incident
Paris cites anger over treatment of Sumud flotilla activists as justification for exclusion, marking a significant diplomatic friction point between France and Israel.

France has formally banned Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering French territory, a move announced by Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Saturday. The decision serves as a direct response to the minister’s promotion of a video in which he is seen taunting activists from the Gaza-bound Sumud flotilla, who were subsequently detained by Israeli police.
Barrot confirmed the restriction via a post on X, stating that the measure reflects Paris’s anger regarding the treatment of the activists. The Foreign Minister explicitly linked the ban to the specific content promoted by Ben-Gvir, which depicted the bound and kneeling activists.
In addition to the unilateral travel ban, Barrot indicated that France is pursuing broader diplomatic pressure through European channels. He stated that he is working alongside his Italian counterpart to request that the European Union impose sanctions against the Israeli minister.
The incident has heightened tensions between the two nations, with the French government framing the ban as a necessary stance against the conduct displayed by a senior member of the Israeli cabinet. The Sumud flotilla, a vessel bound for Gaza, had its activists detained by Israeli authorities prior to the video being circulated.
As of Saturday, the scope of the ban and the timeline for any potential EU-level sanctions remain undefined, though the coordination between Paris and Rome signals a unified approach to the diplomatic dispute.
