France and Spain Set for 2026 World Cup Semi-Final Showdown
NHK News Japan reports that France aims for a third consecutive final appearance, while Spain seeks its first in four tournaments, as all host nations have been eliminated from contention.

France and Spain are scheduled to face each other in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, according to a report by NHK News Japan. The match is set for 15 July 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the tournament as the field narrows to the final four teams.
France, currently ranked third in the world, enters the fixture with the objective of reaching the final for the third consecutive tournament. Their path to this stage included a 3-0 victory over Iraq in Philadelphia, a match significantly disrupted by severe weather that halted play after 45 minutes before resuming in Arlington.
Spain, ranked second globally, is seeking to reach the final for the first time in four tournaments. They advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Belgium in a closely contested match, positioning themselves as strong contenders against their European rivals.
The tournament structure has expanded to 48 teams, with England and Argentina also securing spots in the semi-finals. Notably, all host nations—Mexico, Canada, and the United States—have been eliminated from contention, leaving the remaining European and South American sides to battle for the title.
Kylian Mbappé has been a key figure for France, scoring eight goals throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, other notable performances include Jude Bellingham’s two goals for England against Norway and Lionel Messi’s contributions for Argentina, although he did not score in their semi-final qualification match against Switzerland.
Despite Erling Haaland finishing as the tournament’s top scorer, he did not secure the Golden Boot award. The outcome of the France versus Spain clash remains unknown, with NHK indicating that fast reports are planned to provide updates on the developing contest.
