France and Spain mobilise state resources as wildfires displace 150,000

Authorities in France and Spain have evacuated a combined total of 150,000 people as extreme heat and high winds fuel fast-moving wildfires across the region. Officials in both nations have described the scale of the blazes as unprecedented, mobilising significant state resources to contain the fires that are threatening major population centres and infrastructure.

In France, the crisis has intensified with over 110,000 people displaced. Fires have scorched approximately 14,000 hectares of forest, particularly north of Arcachon Bay and in the Var department. The French Interior Ministry has prioritised the protection of Bordeaux, which remains under direct threat from the advancing flames.

French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the mobilisation of the military to assist containment efforts, while Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu has chaired government crisis meetings to coordinate the response. The situation remains volatile, with weather conditions complicating firefighting operations.

Meanwhile, Spain has declared a national emergency as two major wildfires west of Madrid merged into a single, larger blaze. This convergence has forced the evacuation of more than 19,000 residents from the affected areas. The merging of the fires has significantly expanded the area under threat, requiring substantial emergency response resources.

Wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h have been reported in affected areas, exacerbating the spread of the fires and hindering containment efforts in both countries. The combination of extreme heat and strong winds continues to drive the rapid expansion of the blazes, keeping authorities on high alert as they work to stabilise the situation.
