Framework has acknowledged that a recent BIOS update for its Ryzen 7040-series laptops has left some devices in a non-bootable state. The company stated that it is investigating the root cause of the issue and has announced it will replace out-of-warranty mainboards in cases where it can confirm the failure was caused by a stable-release BIOS update.

The problem affects the Framework Laptop 13 models equipped with AMD Ryzen 7040-series processors, which began shipping in 2023. In June 2026, Framework released BIOS version 3.20, which added support for features such as a haptic touchpad and new speakers for the higher-end Framework Laptop 13 Pro. The update also addressed issues with battery status reporting.

While some users reported successful installations, numerous others claimed the update process stalled, resulting in a black screen and an unresponsive machine. Framework confirmed in a statement that it has received reports of a "small percentage" of Framework Laptop 13 7040 Series BIOS updates resulting in non-bootable boards.

Prior to the company's latest response, some users reported that Framework support advised them to purchase a new motherboard because their devices were out of warranty. In response, Framework said it is making exceptions for out-of-warranty replacements where a stable-release BIOS update is confirmed as the cause of the non-bootable state.

To address potential future issues, Framework is introducing a "Crisis Recovery Mode" BIOS functionality. This feature, already available in the Framework Desktop BIOS, is being rolled out to the Framework Laptop 12, 13, and 16 models in upcoming release cycles. The mode is designed to enable a path for failed updates to be directly recoverable.

Reports of users experiencing problems with BIOS upgrades on Ryzen 7040-based Framework Laptop 13 devices date back to at least March 2025. Software developer Guanzhong Chen, who published a detailed account of the issue, suggested the problem stems from a software bug that displays random memory on the screen. Chen noted that the BIOS flashing process appears slower than using a standard programmer, raising questions about the underlying mechanics of the update.
