Fox Sports has released its ranking of the ten best linebackers in the National Football League ahead of the 2026 season, prompting a reassessment of the hierarchy at the position. The report centres on whether San Francisco 49ers player Fred Warner retains his status as the league’s best following a severe ankle injury that ended his 2025 campaign prematurely.
Warner, a four-time first-team All-Pro, has been considered the standard-bearer for the position since the turn of the decade. However, the Fox Sports ranking indicates a competitive shift, with Warner receiving first-place votes alongside Detroit Lions player Jack Campbell and Baltimore Ravens player Roquan Smith. This distribution of top votes suggests that Warner’s return from injury has not guaranteed an immediate, uncontested return to the top of the rankings.
The analysis also highlights Kansas City Chiefs player Ben Bolton, who has established himself as one of the league’s most consistent off-ball linebackers since entering the NFL in 2021. Bolton, who contributed to two Super Bowl victories for the Chiefs, is coming off a second consecutive season with 100-plus tackles, six pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble. With the Chiefs’ secondary undergoing significant changes this offseason, Bolton is expected to assume a more pronounced role in the back-seven as the green-dot playcaller.
Despite his steady production, the report notes that pass coverage remains an area for improvement for Bolton. Opposing quarterbacks posted a 93.8 passer rating when targeting him in coverage last season, marking the third time in five seasons he has allowed a rating above 90.
Seattle Seahawks player Eric D. Williams also features prominently in the ranking. At 26 years old, Williams has won two Super Bowl rings in six NFL seasons and has served as the Seahawks’ green-dot playcaller since a midseason trade in 2024. He finished the 2025 season with a career-high five interceptions and 126 combined tackles, earning second-team All-Pro honours for the first time in his career.
The inclusion of these players in the top tier of the Fox Sports ranking underscores a broader trend of depth and competition within the NFL’s linebacker corps.
