Fox Sports has released a set of 12 speculative predictions for the 2026 college football season, offering a forward-looking assessment of the 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP) field, national championship contenders, and Heisman Trophy finalists. The publication frames the upcoming season as one defined by uncertainty, noting that chaos and upsets remain the primary constants in the sport.
A central theme of the forecast is the competitive depth within the Big Ten Conference. Fox Sports contributor Ben Portnoy predicts that defending national champion Indiana will challenge both Ohio State and Oregon for the conference title. Portnoy highlights the stability of the Indiana programme, noting that head coach Curt Cignetti has retained nine of his 10 on-field assistants from the previous season, a factor he views as critical to the team’s continued success.
The predictions also point to a significant shift in the hierarchy of the Group of Six conferences. RJ Young forecasts that North Dakota State will emerge as the highest-ranked Group of Six program, securing a CFP spot under the rule that only the top-ranked team from that division receives a playoff berth, regardless of conference title status.
