Four teams open MLB Wild Card Series with wins
Atlanta, Chicago, San Diego and New York took Game 1 of their best-of-three series, with late power and dominant pitching shaping the openers.
Four teams began the 2026 MLB Wild Card Series with Game 1 victories. The Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5–3, the Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 6–3, the San Diego Padres shut out the Chicago Cubs 8–0, and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 9–0.
Atlanta’s win came after the Phillies moved ahead 3–2 in the seventh. Austin Riley hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth, giving the Braves a 1–0 lead in the best-of-three series.
The White Sox secured their first postseason win since 2021, according to Fox Sports. San Diego built its lead early: Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado homered in the first inning, and Michael King carried a no-hit bid into the seventh.
New York’s Ben Rice hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs. Yankees starter Cam Schlittler struck out 10 in the shutout.
Atlanta, Chicago, San Diego and New York each have a chance to build on their opening win in Game 2.
