Yahoo Sports analyst Justin Boone has flagged four NFL running back units as particularly difficult to project for the 2026 fantasy season, citing complex depth charts and shifting team dynamics. The analysis focuses on the Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Washington Commanders, where traditional lead-back roles are increasingly blurred by committee structures.

In Jacksonville, Boone projects a three-man committee involving Tuten, Rodriguez, and Allen, noting that the outcome will likely depend on how offensive coordinator Liam Coen allocates touches. While Tuten is viewed as the primary fantasy target due to his dynamic profile and elite speed, Rodriguez remains a low-ceiling option who may struggle to produce without significant pass-catching involvement.

The New England Patriots backfield is described as a race between veteran Stevenson and sophomore Henderson, with Boone projecting Henderson as a high-end breakout candidate who will eventually take over the workload. Although Stevenson retains value as a flex option, the analyst notes a ticking clock on his tenure, particularly given that Henderson outproduced him in the 2025 season.

Pittsburgh presents a different set of challenges, with the backfield outlook heavily dependent on quarterback uncertainty and the arrival of new head coach Mike McCarthy. Boone suggests that while the unit remains a committee led by Warren, the presence of Dowdle—who has a history with McCarthy and topped 1,300 scrimmage yards in the previous two seasons—creates significant competition for the lead role.

Washington's running back situation is characterised as a work-in-progress under new offensive coordinator David Blough, involving Croskey-Merritt, White, and Allen. Boone views Croskey-Merritt as the most exciting option with the highest ceiling, while White offers a safer role as a proven pass-catcher, and Allen serves as a late-round dart throw with potential for a touchdown-heavy role.

Boone emphasises that the analysis relies heavily on 2025 performance data and historical precedents, such as the Lions' evolution from David Montgomery to Jahmyr Gibbs, to predict future trajectories.
