Former Indian fast bowler Amanpreet Gill passes away at 36
The former India U-19 cricketer, who represented the state in domestic competition and served on the senior selection committee, died following a period of illness with the cause undisclosed.
The Punjab Cricket Association has confirmed the death of Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former fast bowler who represented India in the 2007 Under-19 Tri-Series, at the age of 36. Gill passed away on Wednesday, 6 May, following a period of illness, leaving the cricketing fraternity in shock. His last rites are scheduled to take place at the Manimajra Cremation Ground in Chandigarh later that day.
Born in Chandigarh in September 1989, Gill built his reputation through domestic cricket for Punjab before earning recognition on the international stage. During the 2007 Under-19 Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, he featured alongside future stars such as Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey. In that tournament, the left-arm pacer took nine wickets in five matches and played a crucial role in the final against Bangladesh, where he delivered a match-winning performance.
Following his retirement from active playing, Gill remained committed to the development of the sport. He served on Punjab's senior selection committee, contributing to the growth of young cricketers in the state. His professional journey also included a stint with Kings XI Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings, in the Indian Premier League, where he was regarded as a lively and committed fast bowler.
Tributes have begun to flow from across the cricket community, with former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh issuing a heartfelt statement on X. Singh recalled sharing the dressing room with Gill during their early days together, describing him as a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. The former teammate extended his condolences to Gill's family and loved ones, wishing for his rest in peace.
The Punjab Cricket Association expressed its deep condolences, highlighting Gill's dedication both on and off the field. While the official cause of death has not been disclosed by authorities or the family, the cricket community is focusing on celebrating the life and contributions of a player who left a significant mark on the state's cricketing history.
