Former Iranian diplomat Hossein Mousavian and former US diplomat Alan Eyre have warned that the conflict with Iran could worsen in the coming weeks, with neither a peace deal nor a permanent stalemate likely soon.

Speaking on an Al Jazeera programme, the two former diplomats drew on their experience in earlier negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme. Their assessment is a forecast, not evidence that escalation is inevitable.

Mousavian said Iranian leaders do not believe US claims that the war is about nuclear weapons rather than oil. The programme did not independently establish how widely that view is held among Iran’s leadership.

Eyre argued that regional countries should take the lead in diplomacy, with US support. He said the Trump administration preferred quick wins to diplomacy.

The comments leave open what diplomatic steps might follow. Eyre’s proposal assigns regional governments a leading role, while the programme offered no specific process or timetable for negotiations.
