Former Broncos safety Justin Simmons retires from the NFL
Simmons, who spent eight seasons in Denver, announced his departure on Wednesday as he plans a transition to foundation work and a new career path
Two-time Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons has officially announced his retirement from the NFL, concluding a professional career that spanned 134 games. The announcement was made on Wednesday, marking the end of his tenure with the Denver Broncos, where he spent the majority of his time, and the Atlanta Falcons, where he played one season.
Simmons, who was selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, stated his decision was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family and expand his work with his foundation. He expressed gratitude for the farewell provided by the Broncos, his family, and team members, noting in a video posted to Instagram that being a Denver Bronco was "my heart, my home and my story."
During his tenure with the Broncos, Simmons played 118 games, including 108 starts, and was chosen for two Pro Bowls. He finished sixth in franchise history in interceptions with 30 of his 32 career interceptions coming in a Broncos uniform. His total career statistics include 666 tackles, 71 passes defended, and five forced fumbles.
The announcement coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Broncos selecting him with the 98th overall pick in the 2016 draft. Simmons noted that while his time in Denver coincided with a period of franchise struggle and a long playoff drought, he remained a constant presence and a prominent figure in the community.
Off the field, Simmons was recognised for his community efforts, including extensive work at the Denver Boys & Girls Club. He was a three-time Walter Payton Man of the Year with the Broncos and served as a three-time team captain, aiming to be remembered for how he helped improve lives.
Regarding his immediate post-retirement plans, Simmons confirmed he intends to attend a Broncos game and tailgate for the upcoming season, noting he has never done so before. He also plans to meet with various individuals to plan a new career path while focusing on his foundation work.
