Former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang to Plead Guilty to Acting as Chinese Agent
Wang has resigned from office following the unsealing of a plea deal that carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.
Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has agreed to plead guilty to a single felony count of acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government. The admission of guilt follows the unsealing of a nineteen-page plea deal on Monday, which details the charges brought by the US Attorney's Office in the Central District of California. Wang, who resigned from her mayoral office within hours of the case becoming public, now faces a maximum potential sentence of ten years in prison.
Prosecutors allege that between late 2020 and 2022, Wang and her colleague Yaoning Mike Sun promoted pro-China propaganda on the US News Center website under the direct control of Chinese government officials. The specific content targeted included articles disputing reports regarding the persecution, forced labour, and abuse of ethnic Uyghurs in China's Xinjiang region. According to the court filing, the pair received and executed directives from Chinese officials to publish this material on the site, which served the local Chinese-American community.
This development marks a significant step in the US Department of Justice's ongoing efforts to identify foreign influence operations within American public institutions. US Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A Eisenberg has expressed deep concern regarding the undisclosed nature of Wang's relationship with the People's Republic of China, emphasising that elected officials must act solely for the people they represent.
Wang's legal representatives, Jason Liang and Brian Sun, issued a statement asserting that their client accepts responsibility for past personal mistakes and apologises for them. They further stated that Wang's love and devotion to the Arcadia community have not changed. However, the formal plea is scheduled for a future hearing, pending which a bond of $25,000 has been set.
The case involves several key figures linked to the alleged influence operation. Wang's former colleague, Yaoning Mike Sun, has already pleaded guilty to the same charge in October 2025 and is currently serving a four-year prison sentence. Prosecutors also allege that Wang communicated with John Chen, a Chinese Communist Party figure who pleaded guilty to being an agent for the Chinese government in 2024 and was sentenced to twenty months in prison.
Arcadia, a heavily Chinese-American suburb situated just north of Los Angeles with a population of approximately 53,000 residents, was the setting for these events. Wang was elected to the city council in November 2022 and assumed the rotating position of mayor in February 2026 before her resignation. The unsealing of the plea deal on Monday confirms the details of her admission of guilt to the felony charge.
