Florida Gators confirm Aaron Philo as starting quarterback for season opener

The Florida Gators have confirmed their starting quarterback for the upcoming season opener against Florida Atlantic, with head coach Jon Sumrall naming redshirt sophomore Aaron Philo to the role. The decision marks the conclusion of a tight competition during fall camp, where Philo secured the position over returning redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr.

Sumrall indicated that the selection was finalised following the team’s second intrasquad scrimmage on 22 August, after individual meetings with both candidates. The coach identified Philo’s capacity to operate the offence at the line of scrimmage as the decisive factor in the decision-making process.

Philo, listed at 6-foot-1 and 207 pounds, brings specific familiarity to the Florida offensive scheme. This continuity is attributed to the hiring of new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech in December of the previous year, a move that aligns with Philo’s prior collegiate experience.

During his time at Georgia Tech, Philo served as a backup to Haynes King. Across eight career games, the quarterback recorded 938 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. His collegiate background provides a direct link to the current coaching staff’s offensive philosophy.

Before his university career, Philo was rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN. He finished his high school career as the all-time leader in passing yards for Georgia high school football, accumulating 13,922 yards. This performance surpassed the previous record of 13,902 yards held by Trevor Lawrence, who is currently a quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Gators will face Florida Atlantic in Week 1, with Philo set to lead the offence from the start. The announcement follows a period of evaluation where both quarterbacks demonstrated competitiveness, but Sumrall ultimately prioritised Philo’s execution at the point of attack.
