Assistant coach joins Chris Hart’s new regime at NC State, leaving Kevin O’Sullivan with two open positions following David Kopp’s exit.

Florida Gators baseball assistant coach Taylor Black has departed the program to join NC State as recruiting coordinator, according to reports from Yahoo Sports. Black will reunite with Chris Hart, who was recently promoted to head coach at NC State, where Black previously served from 2014 to 2017.

Black’s four-year tenure at Florida included roles as a hitting coach and recruiter, contributing to two College World Series appearances for the Gators. His departure leaves head coach Kevin O’Sullivan with two vacant staff positions ahead of the offseason, following the recent firing of pitching coach David Kopp after five seasons.

The coaching changes come in the wake of Florida’s elimination in the Gainesville Regional by Troy, ending a season that concluded with a 41-21 record and a No. 8 national seed. During the regional, the Gators surrendered 43 runs and 49 hits, prompting O’Sullivan to call for a broader evaluation of the program’s performance.

“Honestly, we need to evaluate this because we have to be more consistent all the way around,” O’Sullivan said after the loss. He cited offensive spurts and issues with walks as key factors, noting that inconsistencies in both hitting and pitching made it difficult to make consistent decisions during critical moments.

The structural shifts at Florida now require the administration to fill at least two spots on O’Sullivan’s staff. The timing of Black’s move to NC State underscores the ongoing transition within the Gators’ program as it seeks to address the performance issues highlighted during the recent postseason run.
