Flavio Bolsonaro seeks White House audience as campaign struggles with funding scandal
Incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva retakes polling lead following controversy over financing request from convicted fraudster

Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has met with US President Donald Trump at the White House, a move aimed at revitalising his political standing amid a deepening crisis within his presidential campaign. The senator shared a photograph of the encounter on Tuesday, posting an image of himself standing beside the US president in the Oval Office accompanied by a thumbs-up emoji.
The meeting occurs as Bolsonaro faces significant headwinds following reports that he sought funds from a disgraced banker convicted of fraud. The financier was reportedly approached to help finance a film project about Bolsonaro’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. Flavio Bolsonaro has acknowledged the request for money but has denied any impropriety or wrongdoing in the transaction.
This controversy has had tangible effects on the electoral landscape. Recent polling indicates that incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has retaken the lead in the race for the October election. The shift comes after previous polls had shown a tight contest between the incumbent and the younger Bolsonaro, who has emerged as the standard-bearer for Brazil’s political right.
Bolsonaro travelled to Washington without a guaranteed appointment, hoping to secure the meeting to bolster his image. The visit follows a period of heightened tension between the Trump administration and the Brazilian government, during which Trump previously placed tariffs on Brazil. Those measures were reportedly intended to influence the legal proceedings against the elder Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for his role in a coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 election.
Relations between Trump and Lula have reportedly eased in recent months, with the Brazilian president visiting the White House earlier this month. Despite this diplomatic thaw, Trump has not yet shared details about his meeting with Bolsonaro on his social media platforms. The exact nature of the discussions remains unclear, leaving the long-term impact of the encounter on the Brazilian campaign uncertain as the election approaches.
