Five survivors recovered from flooded cave in Laos as search for two missing continues
Rescue teams have located five of seven Lao villagers trapped for over a week following a landslide, with Thai specialists assisting in the ongoing search for the remaining two individuals.

Rescue operations in central Laos have resulted in the recovery of five villagers who were trapped inside a flooded cave for more than a week. The survivors, located on Wednesday, were reported to be in good health, though search efforts for the two remaining missing individuals are continuing in the Xaisomboun province.
The incident began last week when seven Lao nationals entered the cave system. Heavy rainfall subsequently triggered a landslide that blocked their exit, isolating the group. State-run Lao Phattana News and local volunteer groups confirmed the trapping, noting that the villagers had entered the site prior to the adverse weather conditions.
The discovery was confirmed at 4:30 pm local time (09:30 GMT) by both Laotian and Thai volunteer rescue groups. A Laotian volunteer group stated on social media, “We’ve found 5 people alive and all safe. There are still 2 people we are searching for.” Thai rescuer Kengkach Bangkawong corroborated the timeline, noting the specific time of the find while emphasising that the search for the others remained active.
Visual evidence shared by Thai volunteer rescuer Chakrakrit Taengtung showed the five survivors cheering and appearing in good spirits. The footage, posted to social media, depicted the group raising their arms and smiling, suggesting they were in good health despite the extended period of entrapment. However, official medical assessments have not yet been detailed in public reports.
The rescue effort has been bolstered by international assistance, with a Thai volunteer team joining the operation on Sunday. This contingent included a diver who participated in the high-profile 2018 Thai cave rescue, an operation that drew global attention and involved specialists from across the world. The presence of experienced personnel highlights the complexity of the current mission.
Access to the site presents significant logistical challenges. Videos shared online indicate that reaching the cave entrance requires a steep, rocky hike of approximately 4 kilometres. The entrance itself is described as barely wide enough for a single person, complicating the movement of rescuers and equipment into the flooded interior.
While the immediate priority remains locating the two missing villagers, questions have arisen regarding the purpose of the initial expedition. There has been no official confirmation from authorities regarding why the group entered the cave. However, Bounkham Luanglath from the Lao organisation Rescue Volunteer for People stated that the cave is frequented by locals seeking gold, despite repeated safety warnings from authorities.
