Five injured in stabbing at New York Penn Station ahead of presidential visit
A random act of violence at a major transit hub prompts manhunt and heightened protocols as President Donald Trump prepares to attend Game 3 of the NBA finals.

Five people were injured in a stabbing incident at New York City’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, prompting a manhunt and the apprehension of a suspect described by authorities as emotionally disturbed. The attack occurred around 19:00 EST, just as the city was implementing enhanced security measures in anticipation of US President Donald Trump’s visit on Monday.
The New York Fire Department confirmed that one individual sustained serious injuries, two suffered moderate wounds, and the remainder incurred minor injuries. All five victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. Law enforcement officials characterised the incident as a random act of violence, with Amtrak police taking the suspect into custody following the pursuit.
The timing of the assault coincides with a significant escalation in security protocols across the city. President Trump is scheduled to attend Game 3 of the NBA finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on Monday evening. New York’s Penn Station is located directly beneath the arena, making the transit hub a focal point for security operations during the high-profile event.
City officials have announced strict new precautions for the game, including a no-bag policy and the cancellation of a watch party outside the arena. These measures are part of a broader strategy to manage public safety and crowd control during the president’s appearance. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also scheduled to attend the match.
While the immediate threat has been neutralised with the arrest of the suspect, the incident underscores the complexities of managing public security in dense urban environments during major political and sporting events. Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
