Fiji Rugby Player Dies in Japan Amid Record-Breaking Heatwave

Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old Fijian rugby player for the Japanese second-division club Kyushu KV, has died in Fukuoka from suspected heatstroke. The club confirmed on Saturday that Vunilagi was hospitalised on Monday following team training, when local temperatures reached 35°C, and passed away on Friday morning.

Vunilagi, a back row forward standing 196cm and weighing 117kg, had attended university in Japan and began his professional career in 2023. Kyushu KV described him as having a "generous spirit and powerful style of play," noting that he had only recently joined the squad. The club issued a statement expressing devastation and extending condolences to his bereaved family, highlighting the high hopes his contributions had raised for the upcoming season.

The incident occurs against the backdrop of Japan’s hottest summer on record, with parts of the country recently recording temperatures of 40°C. According to the fire and disaster management agency, nearly 18,600 people were taken to hospital for heatstroke between July 20 and 26. During that same period, 45 individuals were pronounced dead on arrival.

Japan typically experiences approximately 1,300 heat-related deaths annually, a figure the government aims to halve by 2030. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat events in Japan and elsewhere are attributed by scientists to human-induced climate change. This trend has already led to significant disruptions, including the death of three lions at a Tokyo zoo from suspected heatstroke this week.

Authorities have increasingly adjusted the scheduling of cultural and sporting events to mitigate heat risks. The country’s highest recorded temperature of 41.8°C was registered on August 5, 2025, in Isesaki, north of Tokyo. Recent adjustments included the timing of the World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya, which held its final summer edition last weekend.
