FIFA launches disciplinary probe into World Cup final melee
The investigation comes as football’s regulator also reviews a separate incident involving a political banner displayed by Argentine players during their semi-final victory.
FIFA has initiated a formal disciplinary investigation into a physical altercation between Spanish and Argentine players following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup final in New Jersey. The global governing body confirmed on Monday that its Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed to assess potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) regarding the post-match incidents.
The probe was triggered by footage showing a multi-player melee after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to claim their second World Cup title. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 105th minute, assisted by Nico Williams, completing a continental and global double for manager Luis de la Fuente following Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.
Central to the investigation is the conduct of Argentine defender Leandro Paredes. Video evidence shows Paredes shoving Spanish player Eric Garcia by the throat. When substitute Gavi intervened, Paredes pushed him to the ground. Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni attempted to separate the players but was involved in further pushing before being restrained by a teammate.
Amidst the chaos, Spanish star Lamine Yamal was captured in viral footage kneeling and praying while the altercation unfolded behind him. Despite the tension, some players exchanged warm embraces, including Yamal and Argentine captain Lionel Messi, whose final World Cup appearance this match marked.
The discord extended to the medal ceremony, where Spain formed a guard of honour and applauded Argentina. The Argentinian players turned their backs on the newly crowned champions and refused to return the applause as they received their silver medals. FIFA stated that a report on the findings would be shared once the investigation is completed, though no sanctions have been announced at this stage.
This disciplinary action follows a separate FIFA probe into a political banner displayed by Argentine players Lisandro Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso during their semi-final victory over England. The banner referenced the Falkland Islands (Las Malvinas), sparking diplomatic tension with the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of the British overseas territory.
