FIFA has instructed a disciplinary prosecutor to report on post-match altercations following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final. The investigation centres on physical confrontations that occurred at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including tangles between Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Spain’s Eric Garcia and Gavi, as well as Spain captain Rodri being struck by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente told Spanish public broadcaster TVE that the conduct was “intolerable and unacceptable,” noting that such behaviour cannot be allowed from players of that calibre. De la Fuente clarified that he did not witness the specific incidents at the time because he was celebrating with others, but he praised his squad for maintaining composure in the face of provocation.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala apologised on Wednesday for a confrontation with Spain’s Dani Olmo. Ayala clarified that the incident involved a shove rather than a punch, distinguishing the nature of the physical contact during the post-match tensions.
The disciplinary remit has not been fully detailed, and it remains unclear whether witness statements will be sought from Spain players and staff. FIFA’s disciplinary rules allow a special prosecutor to request proceedings and propose measures against member associations, clubs, and individuals, though no timetable has been provided for the cases.
Ceremonial tensions also marked the conclusion of the tournament. Spain’s squad stood in a guard of honour for Argentina players walking to the podium to receive medals from US President Donald Trump. However, when Rodri lifted the trophy, most of the Argentina squad turned their backs on the moment.
It is uncertain when any potential bans for Argentina players would apply, as the team does not have competitive games scheduled in the coming months. The victory marks Spain’s second World Cup title, completing a Euro 2024-World Cup 2026 double under De la Fuente.
