FIFA imposes five-match ban on Qatar’s Madibo for serious foul play
The suspension, issued Wednesday, ends Madibo’s tournament campaign and follows a post-match apology and hospital visit by the player and Qatar’s sports minister.

The FIFA disciplinary committee has handed a five-match suspension to Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for serious foul play, ruling him out of the remainder of the 2026 World Cup. The decision, announced on Wednesday, follows a tackle in the 51st minute of Group B’s opening match against Canada that resulted in a broken tibia and fibula for Canadian player Ismael Kone.
The incident occurred during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver. Madibo was issued a straight red card for a challenge from behind that left Kone requiring surgery. The suspension bars Madibo from participating in Qatar’s subsequent matches, including their 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on Wednesday.
While the disciplinary ruling is subject to appeal, the immediate aftermath saw significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations. Madibo visited Kone at the Canadian Soccer Association headquarters, accompanied by Qatar’s sports minister. The Qatar Football Association released photographs of the encounter, showing the two players embracing, with Kone still in a wheelchair.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed that Madibo apologised to Kone in the dressing room immediately following the match. Kone, who was wheeled off the pitch on a stretcher, later posted on social media expressing gratitude for the support received from fans and officials. He was later seen cheering from the sidelines during Canada’s 2-1 loss to Switzerland at BC Place.
The five-match ban places Madibo’s suspension in the context of historical World Cup disciplinary records, though it falls short of the nine-match ban issued to Uruguay’s Luis Suarez for biting in 2014. The incident overshadowed Canada’s historic tournament debut as co-hosts, where substitute Nathan Saliba celebrated his goal by displaying a replica of Kone’s number eight shirt.
