FIFA extends World Cup final interval for charity-driven half-time show
The governing body has approved a potential 25-minute break to accommodate a pitch-level performance supporting the Global Citizen Education Fund, marking a significant operational shift for the tournament’s climax.
FIFA has confirmed that the half-time interval for the 2026 World Cup final may be extended to between 20 and 25 minutes to facilitate a large-scale musical production on the pitch. The adjustment represents a notable deviation from standard regulations, as the Laws of the Game set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) typically cap the break at 15 minutes. The governing body has indicated that competition rules allow for a longer interval with the referee’s approval, though specific implementation details remain unconfirmed.
The extended break is required to allow for the installation and removal of a stage built directly on the playing surface. This logistical requirement distinguishes the final from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final held at the same venue, where a performance took place on a stage above the stands and lasted just over 24 minutes. Organisers have stated that the new pitch-level structure is designed to be assembled and dismantled within minutes to minimise disruption to the match schedule.
The half-time show, curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, will headline a lineup including Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Nigerian artist Burna Boy, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and New York’s PS22 Chorus. The production is explicitly tied to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to expand access to education for children. Bieber described the performance as an opportunity to help expand educational access globally, while Burna Boy noted the responsibility of representing Africa on the world stage.
Prior to kickoff, the closing ceremony will take place at 1:30pm local time (17:30 GMT) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Headlined by American rapper Post Malone, the ceremony will feature performances by Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger, Robbie Williams, and YouTube creator IShowSpeed. Actor Tom Cruise is also scheduled to make a special appearance. Jennifer Hudson will perform the United States national anthem before the match begins.
The final between Spain and Argentina is scheduled for 3pm local time (19:00 GMT) on Sunday, July 19. The venue, home to the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, was temporarily renamed New York-New Jersey Stadium for the tournament. Broadcast rights for the match are held by FOX and Telemundo in the US, CTV and TSN in Canada, TelevisaUnivision, TV Azteca, and ViX in Mexico, and beIN Sports across the Middle East and North Africa.
