FIFA confirms Gianni Infantino will seek re-election in 2027
FIFA says Infantino’s re-election plans remain unchanged as critics challenge his proposed fourth term and UEFA pursues documents for possible legal proceedings.
FIFA has confirmed that Gianni Infantino intends to seek re-election as president in 2027, despite mounting criticism of his leadership and questions over the legality of a proposed fourth term.
A FIFA spokesperson said Infantino’s plans had not changed after the president declined to answer questions about his future at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. The next presidential election is scheduled for 18 March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco.
Infantino was elected in 2016 and maintains that his initial spell should not count towards FIFA’s three-term limit because it completed an interrupted mandate. Critics and rights groups have asked the organisation’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee to block his proposed bid.
The leadership challenge follows an abandoned plan to transfer commercial rights linked to the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup to a new subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise, backed by private investors.
UEFA has sought approval from a US court to obtain FIFA-related documents for possible criminal proceedings in Switzerland involving Infantino and potentially other FIFA officials and advisers. No criminal charges have been established, and FIFA has described UEFA’s action as a smear campaign.
All 211 FIFA member associations will take part in the election, with 106 votes required to win. Candidates must declare their candidacy by 18 November, while the formal acceptance and legality of Infantino’s bid under FIFA’s term-limit rules remain unresolved.
