Fenerbahce transfer talks with Mason Greenwood collapse amid election shift
Negotiations for the English striker to join the Süper Lig side have ended following the impending defeat of presidential candidate Hakan Safi, while AS Roma continues early-stage interest.

Negotiations for English striker Mason Greenwood to join Fenerbahce have been called off, ending a potential move that was closely tied to the club’s internal political dynamics. The collapse of talks follows the impending defeat of presidential candidate Hakan Safi, who had previously secured a four-year agreement with the player and expressed willingness to meet Marseille’s financial demands.
Safi, an entrepreneur and presidential candidate at the Turkish club, had identified Greenwood as a signature component of his project. He had worked extensively on the deal, reaching the initial agreement with the player. However, the change in Fenerbahce’s top management, resulting from the election outcome, has led to the cancellation of the transfer.
The end of the negotiations was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who stated that the deal will not materialise. The report suggests that Greenwood risks remaining just one of the many promises tied to the Turkish club’s election campaign, rather than a completed acquisition.
Meanwhile, AS Roma remains interested in signing Greenwood, with early-stage negotiations ongoing between the club, Marseille, and the player. The Italian side has been monitoring the situation closely as a potential reinforcement for their new project under manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
Greenwood is considered one of Gasperini’s popular prospects as the club seeks quality additions. While the withdrawal of Fenerbahce removes one of the likely contenders from the race, Roma continues to cultivate interest in the striker, with talks still in their initial phases.
