What to know about Mexico ahead of FIFA 2026 World Cup: Can El Tri make noise as co-hosts?
Tensions between the Mexican Football Federation and Liga MX clubs over player availability have been resolved, allowing head coach Javier Aguirre to finalise his roster for the 2026 tournament.

The Mexican Football Federation has resolved a significant administrative dispute with Liga MX clubs, clearing the final hurdle for head coach Javier Aguirre to select his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The conflict, which centred on player availability during the domestic Clausura playoffs, was settled after the federation issued a strict ultimatum regarding attendance at national training camps.

The dispute arose when the federation sought to convene a multi-week training camp for domestic-based players to build tactical cohesion before European-based teammates joined. This schedule conflicted with the Liguilla playoffs, prompting resistance from clubs such as Toluca and Chivas. Toluca sought exemptions to retain players for the Concacaf Champions Cup, a competition not covered by the federation’s initial agreement with clubs.

Chivas owner Amaury Vergara publicly criticised the situation, stating that agreements were only valid when all parties respected them. In response, the federation issued an official statement declaring that any player failing to attend the training camp by the deadline would be excluded from the World Cup squad. Following this directive, both franchises agreed to honour the prior arrangements, allowing the national team camp to proceed without further interference.

With the administrative chaos resolved, Aguirre must now narrow his 55-player preliminary roster to a final 26-man squad by June 1. The team is preparing for two final friendly matches against Australia and Serbia. The selection process is complicated by the status of captain Edson Alvarez, who underwent ankle surgery in February and did not feature in the recent 2-0 victory over Ghana. His availability remains a key variable for the midfield, with Erik Lira identified as a potential alternative.

Mexico, known as El Tri, is co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States and Canada. The nation will host the opening ceremony and the first match against South Africa. Following an embarrassing group-stage exit in 2022, the federation has placed high expectations on the team to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986. Aguirre, serving alongside assistant Rafa Marquez, aims to stabilise the program and build toward the 2030 World Cup.

The squad’s recent form has shown improvement after a six-game winless streak at the end of 2025. Victories against Iceland and Ghana have restored confidence, with goalkeeper Raul Rangel emerging as the likely starter after keeping six clean sheets this year. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez continues to lead the attack, while young talents such as Brian Gutierrez are applying pressure on selection decisions.
