Legal challenge dismissed as plaintiffs fail to prove direct impact or timely filing

A federal judge has dismissed a legal challenge seeking to prevent the UFC Freedom 250 event from taking place on the White House grounds, removing the final judicial obstacle to the mixed martial arts spectacle. US District Judge Amit Mehta ruled against two Washington-area residents who had argued that the Trump administration exceeded its authority by staging the event without congressional authorisation.

The judge determined that the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate they were directly affected by the administration’s actions and had unreasonably delayed in bringing the lawsuit. A White House spokesperson described the ruling as a rejection of an untimely and frivolous effort, while lawyers for the challengers stated they were disappointed but respected the decision, framing the case as an issue of corruption rather than sport.

The event, scheduled for President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, will feature an octagonal cage erected inside a 28-metre high claw-like structure on the White House’s South Lawn. The headlining bout sees unbeaten lightweight champion Ilia Topuria defend his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje. Topuria, returning from a nearly yearlong hiatus following a highly publicised divorce, has stated his intention to knock out Gaethje in the first round, citing his status as the best in the world.

Gaethje, 37, dismissed Topuria’s threats, emphasising that his experience would be the decisive factor in the contest. The fighters’ tensions escalated during a final news conference near the Lincoln Memorial, where Topuria shoved Gaethje. UFC President Dana White intervened to separate the pair, while Gaethje responded with laughter, asking his opponent to consider the setting before acting like an animal.

The card also features a co-main event where Alex Pereira challenges Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title, with Pereira seeking to become the first three-division champion in UFC history. American fan favourite Shawn O’Malley is set to face Canadian Aiemann Zahabi. The UFC’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings, is publicly traded, and its former executive Linda McMahon currently serves as the US Education Secretary.
