FDA launches sixth Cyclospora probe as US cases eclipse annual norms
The US Food and Drug Administration has opened an investigation into a fresh cluster of Cyclospora cases, bringing the national total to over 11,500. While health officials previously declared the situation under control, the latest outbreak details remain undisclosed as agencies face significant resource constraints.
The US Food and Drug Administration announced on 22 July 2026 that it is investigating a new outbreak of Cyclospora, a foodborne parasite responsible for severe gastrointestinal illness. The agency confirmed that seventy-two cases have been identified within this specific cluster, marking the sixth Cyclospora outbreak investigation opened by the FDA in 2026. However, the regulator provided no immediate details regarding the geographic location of these cases or how they are linked.
This new inquiry occurs against the backdrop of a massive nationwide surge. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are now over 11,500 cases reported across 41 states, comprising 4,173 confirmed and more than 7,400 probable infections. The outbreak has resulted in 308 hospitalisations and no deaths. The current volume of cases in July alone significantly exceeds the typical annual US total, which historically ranges between 2,000 and 5,000 cases.
The majority of the national caseload is tied to a previous outbreak involving shredded iceberg lettuce grown in Mexico and distributed by Taylor Farms. Michigan has accounted for the bulk of these infections, reporting 7,664 cases and 106 hospitalisations as of 23 July. The contaminated produce was distributed to 27 states and found in retail locations such as Walmart, as well as in foodservice channels including Jack in the Box, Sysco, and US Foods.
Despite the escalating numbers, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated earlier in the week that the national surge was “under control.” The FDA has confirmed that a traceback investigation is underway to identify potential food sources for the new outbreak, but specific sources have not yet been disclosed. It remains unclear whether this new cluster is linked to the Taylor Farms lettuce or represents a separate contamination event.
Regulatory bodies are operating under strained conditions, with both the FDA and CDC having faced budget and staffing cuts under the Trump administration. The Department of Health and Human Services, along with the FDA and CDC, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the new outbreak. Beyond the six Cyclospora inquiries, the FDA currently has ten other open investigations into foodborne outbreaks involving pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Clostridium botulinum, and Listeria monocytogenes.
