FC Bayern Women overturn 4-1 deficit to defeat Barcelona 2-1 and advance in Champions League

FC Bayern Women have advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie. The match, played at Camp Nou in front of 60,021 spectators, saw the Munich side overturn a 4-1 deficit from the first leg to secure a 5-4 aggregate win.

The contest began with Barcelona dominating possession and sending numerous crosses into the Bayern penalty area. However, the visitors maintained composure under a hostile crowd, with Linda Dallmann scoring her 200th competitive goal for the club to equalise in the first half. Despite the equaliser, Alexia Putellas restored Barcelona's lead shortly after the restart, and the hosts struck twice more to make it 4-1 on the night.

Bayern Women shifted the momentum in the second half, dictating play and creating significant pressure on the Catalan defence. In the 71st minute, Pernille Harder scored the decisive goal to seal the victory. A late attempt by Edna Imade in the 83rd minute was disallowed by VAR after initially appearing to cross the line, leaving the celebrations short-lived but the result secure.

The performance marked a significant turnaround for the Munich squad, which had suffered a 7-1 defeat against the same opponent in the first leg earlier in the season. Players including Giulia Gwinn and Bianca Rech highlighted the team's improved mental resilience and ability to perform on the biggest stage in European football despite the adverse circumstances.

Domestically, FC Bayern Women have secured their fourth consecutive Bundesliga title and remain unbeaten in the league this season. The team will now face Hoffenheim and Frankfurt in upcoming fixtures, with the DFB Cup final against Wolfsburg scheduled for 14 May in Cologne.
