Nippon Dynawave Packaging site in Longview sees multiple deaths and critical injuries following implosion

A chemical tank imploded at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, on Tuesday morning, resulting in multiple fatalities and critical injuries among workers and emergency responders. The incident occurred at approximately 7:15am local time (14:15 GMT) at the industrial site located in Cowlitz County, roughly 70km north of Portland, Oregon.

Scott Goldstein, chief of Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue, confirmed the presence of fatalities and critical injuries during a news conference. While the exact number of deaths remained undetermined, authorities stated that officials could confirm fatalities related to the incident. The tank involved was an 80,000-gallon unit, approximately 60 percent full, containing white liquor—a solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide used in paper pulp production.

Emergency responders transported at least nine workers and one firefighter to local hospitals for treatment of chemical burns and other injuries. PeaceHealth St John Medical Center in Longview reported receiving nine patients related to the incident. The hospital noted that one patient died at the facility, six were in fair condition, and two were transferred to other medical centres.

In a joint written statement with Nippon Dynawave and the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Department, the Longview Fire Department addressed public safety concerns. The statement affirmed that the implosion posed no immediate threat to the surrounding community, despite the severity of the injuries sustained by those on site.

Separately, authorities in southern California were monitoring an overheating industrial tank containing methyl methacrylate at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. Officials ruled out the worst-case scenario of an explosion after a crack relieved pressure, with Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Greg Barta reporting that temperatures were holding steady on Tuesday morning.
