Far-right activists face trial over 2022 killing of Argentine rugby international
Loik Le Priol and Romain Bouvier face murder and attempted-murder charges over the death of Federico Martin Aramburu.
Two far-right activists have gone on trial in Paris over the 2022 shooting death of Argentine rugby international Federico Martin Aramburu, in a case expected to continue for several weeks.
Loik Le Priol, 32, faces a murder charge, while Romain Bouvier, 35, faces an attempted-murder charge. Both could face life imprisonment if convicted.
Aramburu, 42, was shot in Paris in the early hours of 19 March 2022 after a late-night argument involving the two defendants and fellow rugby players. He died from his wounds.
Prosecutors allege Bouvier shot at Aramburu from a vehicle before Le Priol later fired the shots that killed him. The precise roles of the defendants and the circumstances of the shooting remain matters for the trial.
Le Priol was a former commando and member of the now-dissolved ultra-right GUD movement. Both men had previously been investigated over the 2015 beating of a former GUD official and were sentenced by a court in 2022.
Aramburu represented Argentina 22 times and played for French clubs including Perpignan, Biarritz and Dax, as well as Glasgow Warriors. France 24 International reported the start of the proceedings.
