Fans light up NYC’s Little Argentina ahead of Spain World Cup final clash
Spain and Argentina set for decisive match in New Jersey

Supporters have gathered in New York City’s Little Argentina neighbourhood to mark the culmination of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The congregation precedes the final match scheduled for Sunday, 19 July 2026, which will determine the next champion of international football.

The event takes place in the shadow of the decisive fixture at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The match pits Spain against Argentina, with the European champions seeking to solidify their status as a global football power and Argentina pursuing a historic achievement in the sport.

Spain advanced to the final by defeating France 2-0 in the semi-final at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on 14 July 2026. Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro secured the victory for the tournament favourites, who won their first World Cup title in 2010.

Argentina enters the final seeking a fourth World Cup title, having previously won in 1978, 1986, and 2022. The team aims to become the first side since Brazil in the 1950s to win back-to-back World Cup titles.

Lionel Messi, aged 39, is tied for the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals. The World Cup trophy was made public on 18 July ahead of the final, as the competition hosted across North America reaches its conclusion.
