Fan sues Albany Firebirds and MVP Arena over player collision injury
Legal proceedings filed in Albany County Supreme Court claim the arena failed to provide adequate protection for spectators in the premium Party Zone seating area.

Stephen Wieland Jr. has initiated legal proceedings against the Albany Firebirds and the operators of MVP Arena, alleging that inadequate safety measures resulted in serious injury during an Arena Football League match. The lawsuit, filed in Albany County Supreme Court on 13 April 2025, centres on an incident that occurred on 21 March 2025 when an unnamed Firebirds player leapt into the stands during a touchdown celebration.
According to the complaint, Wieland was standing in the "Party Zone," a premium spectator area located behind the end zone, when the player ran over the barrier and struck him with significant force. The document states the impact propelled Wieland approximately five feet through the air, causing him to land on an unpadded concrete floor. He was transported to Albany Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with a T12 compression fracture, head trauma, and a traumatic rotator cuff injury to his left shoulder.
The legal filing argues that the venue failed to provide adequate barriers, protective netting, or sufficient setback distance between the field and spectators. Wieland’s attorney, Scott Peterson, contends that the arena operators should have foreseen the risk of player collisions given the nature of arena football, where spectators sit in close proximity to the action. The complaint highlights the lack of warnings regarding these risks and the absence of padding as obvious dangers that were left unaddressed.
Peterson emphasised that Wieland was not assuming an unreasonable risk, stating the fan was standing exactly where he was instructed to occupy. The Party Zone tickets, which ranged from $45 to $62, included access to private facilities and unlimited food and drinks. The attorney argued that the venue has a responsibility to account for the reality of the sport and ensure spectator safety, describing the incident as a foreseeable consequence of the game's format rather than a freak occurrence.
The Albany Firebirds defeated the Southwest Kansas Storm 78-20 in the match where the injury occurred. The team remained undefeated throughout the 2025 season, ultimately winning the Arena Crown Championship in June by defeating the Nashville Kats 60-57. Requests for comment from Firebirds officials regarding the lawsuit were not responded to at the time of filing.
