Falcons quarterback competition officially begins as Penix cleared for full practice

The Atlanta Falcons have officially commenced their quarterback competition following the clearance of Michael Penix Jr. for full practice participation. The 2024 top-10 draft pick, who has been recovering from an ACL injury sustained in November, will now engage in 11-on-11 sessions alongside free agent signee Tua Tagovailoa. This development marks a critical phase in the team's preparation ahead of the regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on 13 September.

Sources indicate that Penix has already impressed the new coaching staff with his arm strength during limited 7-on-7 drills and individual work. His ability to deliver throws that other quarterbacks may not be capable of making has been noted as a significant asset. With the restriction lifted, the staff will now have their first opportunity to observe Penix in a full-game flow setting, allowing for a more comprehensive assessment of his capabilities.

Tua Tagovailoa remains the favourite to secure the starting role, though the competition is now open. Tagovailoa’s performance has been mixed during the preseason, including a 3-of-5 passing effort for 22 yards in the opener against the Broncos. He is expected to play in the preseason finale against the Dolphins on Friday, while it remains unclear whether Penix will see game action in that contest.

The evaluation process will focus on how each quarterback controls the line of scrimmage and manages game flow within the huddle. Under new head coach Kevin Stefanski, the staff aims to determine which player can best bring the offense to life. The next three weeks are designated as a true evaluation period, with both players competing for the starting position based on their performance in practice and any available preseason snaps.

Penix’s previous season was marked by both promise and inconsistency. He made nine starts before his injury, recording a touchdown-to-interception ratio of nine-to-three. However, the Falcons went 3-5 in games where he played from start to finish, and his 60.1 completion percentage ranked fourth-worst among eligible quarterbacks. His QB rating of 88.5 tied with Tagovailoa for 26th-best in the league, highlighting the need for a clear distinction in the current competition.

The decision on the starting quarterback will depend on the outcomes of these upcoming practices and games.
