FA opens new inquiry into Southampton after club admits to spying on rivals
The Football Association has confirmed it is investigating Southampton’s conduct after the club admitted to observing opponents’ training sessions within 72 hours of matches, a breach that previously cost them their place in the Championship final.

The Football Association has formally opened an investigation into Southampton’s conduct following the club’s admission to spying on three other Championship sides during the past season. The inquiry centres on allegations that the club observed opponents’ training sessions within 72 hours of a game, a practice that has already resulted in significant sanctions.
Southampton was previously expelled from the Championship play-offs after an independent disciplinary hearing found them guilty of observing Middlesbrough’s training session at Rockliffe Park. The club has also been deducted four points in the Championship for the next season. Middlesbrough has been reinstated to contest the final against Hull City following the expulsion.
An appeal against these punishments was dismissed on Wednesday evening. The club had argued that the sanctions were disproportionate, but the governing body upheld the original decisions. The dismissal of the appeal cleared the way for the FA to proceed with its current assessment of the broader conduct issues.
On Thursday, an FA spokesperson confirmed the opening of the new investigation but declined to provide further details. The spokesperson stated that the association “won't comment further until we have assessed the evidence,” indicating that the scope of the inquiry is still being defined as part of the governance review process.
The investigation follows a timeline that began with the alleged incident involving Southampton analyst intern William Salt on the Thursday morning prior to the semi-final first leg. An independent EFL disciplinary hearing regarding the initial allegations took place on 19 May, leading to the play-off final being rescheduled for 23 May at Wembley with Middlesbrough in Southampton’s place.
